We are actively seeking candidates for the following positions:
Data Architect/Engineer (Chicago)
Our lifeblood is data. We're looking for an engineer with experience building and managing large data intensive systems. You should have experience with information retrieval, data modeling, validation and standardization.
This role will be responsible for designing our data schema and scaling our data acquisition infrastructure. We're seeking someone with the following skills and experience:
- Hands on software engineering in Python. If it's not your first language, you'll need to be willing to learn and use it.
- Data modeling, schema design, and performance tuning in non-SQL databases. We currently use MongoDB and Redis.
- Information retrieval (crawling) and extraction.

Software Engineers: Front-end, Back-end and DevOps (Chicago)
We're looking for frontend engineers with a strong portfolio of Javascript, Python+Django projects and good design chops. You would be building internally and externally facing applications to support our editorial users. You would be responsible for the full development lifecycle, from user research to design/prototyping to development to deployment.
Our backend team needs developers with strong Python skills on large distributed systems. In particular we have an acute need for devops, API design, information retrieval and data mining experience, but are generally looking for versatile engineers that can work on a variety of interesting problems.
This is a truly unique opportunity to work at an early stage startup working on real computer science problems with real world applications.
We're passionate about our work, but we're not zealots. If you have proven experience in other frameworks and languages and demonstrated ability to learn, we'd still love to talk to you.
Skills & Requirements
- We're a Python shop. You don't have to be an expert at Python but you need to be willing to learn and be great in your language of choice.
- MongoDB, Redis (experience with other non-SQL databases highly desirable)
- Design and performance tuning on modern open source databases
- High volume content oriented and transactional web sites.
- Mobile development: iOS, Android, HTML5 and SMS.
- Expository, analytical and opinion writing (bonus points if you provide a link to your blog).
- Statistics and mathematical modeling, particularly programming in R and equivalents.
- Listening, questioning, debating and consensus building.
Sales Executives (New York & Chicago)
We’re expanding our sales and business development team and are looking for highly motivated and dynamic Sales Executives. You’ll be successful at Narrative Science if you are a strategic thinker, curious, creative and comfortable with the fluid and fast-moving pace of a rapidly growing start-up.
The right person should have a solid understanding of how publishers and companies can leverage data into scalable knowledge and publishable content. The successful sales executive ought to quickly assess and interpret opportunities, identify new markets and be confident in selling a constantly evolving technology solution.
Compensation will be commensurate with experience. Package includes base salary, commission and stock options, as well as full health benefits (medical/dental/vision), vacation and 401K program.
Desired Skills & Requirements
- New York or Chicago based Business Development/Sales Executive
- 5+ years of direct sales experience
- Proactively prospect and qualify new business; craft customized proposals and negotiate contracts
- Understanding of operational and technical infrastructure of institutional financial firms is a plus
- Knowledge of data licensing and business intelligence applications
- Build ongoing C-Level relationships and grow existing account base
- Must be highly organized and capable of working on multiple business development opportunities simultaneously
- Clearly articulate to clients how our solutions can be utilized to help grow existing content areas or lead the development of new content types
Account Manager (Chicago or New York)
The Account Manager serves as the primary business contact for the client and is responsible for client satisfaction. The AM is expected to consistently provide excellent customer service to accounts, as well as represent client needs and goals within the organization to ensure quality. In addition, the AM will should build relationships with clients to encourage new and repeat business opportunities.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for all client communications, conflict resolution, and compliance on client deliverables and revenue.
- Understanding of company capabilities and service, and effectively communicates all offerings to the client.
- Reviews all major deliverables (i.e. strategic brief, function spec, tech spec, etc.) to ensure quality standards and client expectations are met.
- Ensures that client issues are dealt with in an efficient manner.
- Works closely with the project team in order to maintain a continuous knowledge of project status in order to identify potential issues and/or opportunities within or related to the project.
- Ensures that all processes and procedures are completed, quality standards are met, and that projects are profitable.
- Aware of additional opportunities for account growth and new business, involving the Sales Director where appropriate.
- Communicates the client's goals and represent the client's interests to the team.
- Provides regular two-way communication between the client and team, to provide strong team representation and set proper client expectations.
Requirements:
- Proven Account Management skills required in order to create, maintain and enhance customer relationships
- Minimum 3 years of Account/Business Development experience
- Extremely detail oriented
- Motivated, goal oriented, persistent and a skilled negotiator
- High level of initiative and work well in a team environment
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Handles stressful situations and deadline pressures well
- Plans and carries out responsibilities with minimal direction
- Bachelors degree required
Technical Project Manager (Chicago)
We are looking for an experienced technical project manager to coordinate engineering and editorial efforts for customer facing projects. The right candidate will be an insanely good communicator, level headed, organized and be able to anticipate problems before they happen. Desired skills and experience:
- Experience with complicated integration projects
- Knowledge of agile product development philosphies.
- Comfortable running meetings with internal and external stakeholders to synchronize teams and solve problems.
- Software engineering background highly desireable but not necessary. You must be able to talk to engineers about hard technical problems.
- Excellent writing skills
